"Glory and End of Baroque Libraries--and the Fate of Their Books"
Jeff Garrett and Deborah Howe

Chicago Area Conservation Group
February 2001 Meeting
Thursday February 22, 2001 6:00 PM
Northwestern University Library
Evanston, Illinois

The end of the great monastic libraries of Europe around 1800 was
not gradual and peaceful, but sudden and often violent. What
characterized the 18th century library at its richest and most
beautiful? What became of their books and manuscripts in the years
before, during, and after the French Revolution? What treasures were
lost? What others discovered and rescued from dismal vaults? What
are the consequences today of the great "Klostersturm" for libraries
and archives--and conservationists?

Using many illustrations from libraries in Bavaria and Austria--and
from the practice of book conservation today--Northwestern librarian
Jeff Garrett and Conservator Deborah Howe will discuss the fate of
these libraries and their books and how modern research libraries
are dealing with this legacy.

Jeff Garrett is bibliographer for Western Languages & Literatures at
Northwestern University Library. He received his degree in library
science from the University of California at Berkeley and has an
M.A. in linguistics and history from the University of Munich. Among
his relevant publications: "Missing Eco: On Reading The Name of the
Rose as Library Criticism" (1991) and "A Tale of Two Cities: A Brief
History of Northwestern's Greenleaf Library" (1999).

Deborah Howe is the Collections Conservator at Northwestern
University Library. She studied fine binding in France during her
college years. Over the past eleven years she has been active with
the Chicago Hand Bookbinders and has taught classes in the Chicago
area.

We will meet first in the Reference classroom which is on the second
floor of the Library then after the presentation we will come down
to the new Lab for refreshments and viewing of items.

The University Library is located at 1935 Sheridan Road, Evanston,
Illinois
