Paid Internship in Conservation
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is accepting applications
for the 2001 Simmons Internship Program. Designed for students
enrolled in graduate programs interested in pursuing careers in
conservation, history, American studies, museum studies, or related
fields, the Simmons Internship Program provides participants with an
exceptional opportunity to experience life in a major American
history museum.

During the summer of 2001, one Simmons Intern will work on a
conservation project. Dymaxion House--the installation of
Buckminster Fuller's aluminum alloy house opens to the public in
fall 2001. The intern will work with the project conservators to
produce a maintenance manual and assist with the completion and
installation of building components. For more information see
<URL:http://www.hfmgv.org/dymaxion/index.htm>.

The intern will work directly with a conservator who serves as a
mentor. In addition to completing specific project assignments,
Simmons Interns are encouraged to participate in the larger life of
the institution in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding
of the varied aspects of museum work. The capstone experience of
the internship is a formal public presentation of project results.

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, the largest indoor-outdoor
museum in the United States, has an extensive collection with major
holdings in American technology, transportation, and domestic life.
The Research Center houses an outstanding collection of automotive
history, design history, and advertising materials.

Stipend and Term of Internship: The Simmons Internship Program is
funded by the Vera W. and Walter E. Simmons Endowment Fund. The
conservation intern will be awarded a stipend of $2400 per month,
with a maximum internship length of three months. Preference will
be given to the applicant who can participate the full three months.
The project is expected to start at the beginning of the summer, but
starting and ending dates are negotiable.
