The History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine is offering a summer internship to an individual planning further training in conservation of historic books or paper. The position is part of the 2001 NIH Summer Internship Opportunities Program. The position is full time for 3-4 months (May-Sept.) at the GS7 level ($14.36 per hour). At the time of employment, the candidate must be enrolled at the college undergraduate or graduate school level. The internship will provide the opportunity to work with an experienced paper conservator. Under her supervision, the intern will carry out a full treatment in flat paper conservation, construct various housing structures for flat and 3 dimensional objects, provide written descriptions of flat paper and bound books, organize treatment reports and pre- and post-treatment slides and/or organize and identify early bindings removed from rebound books.
