NYU Conservation Environment Workshops March 5-7, 2001 <URL:http://www.scps.nyu.edu/dyncon/rlst/cour_muse.html> The following workshops will be offered March 5-7, 2001, as part of the Building and Construction Seminar Series at the New York University Real Estate Institute. They are a series of separate one-day seminars from 9am to 5:30pm. The topics are selected to be practical and useful in planning and managing collection environments, and are intended for museum, library and archives professionals, such as conservators, curators, archivists, registrars and directors, as well as for architects, engineers and others involved in construction and facilities management for collections-holding institutions. Conservation Environments for Museums and Libraries X63.9762/$185 March 5, 2001. This seminar discusses the issues involved in establishing safe "conservation" environments for preservation of museum, library and archive collections. Environmental goals are discussed for humidity, temperature, lighting, particulate control, gaseous contamination, and collection safety. Solutions to typical situations and problems are discussed for HVAC, lighting and building envelopes, including precautions to take in the design, construction and operation of conservation environments. Low-cost as well as fully- financed improvements are discussed. 1.0 CEU. Establishing a Conservation Environment Monitoring Program X63.9769/$185 March 6, 2001. This seminar discusses how to establish a monitoring program for conservation environments in museums, libraries, and archives. Practical methods to monitor humidity, temperature, lighting, particulates, gaseous contamination and collection safety are discussed along with suggested equipment and practical field techniques. 1.0 CEU. HVAC for Museums, Libraries, and Archives X63.8035/$185 March 7, 2001. This seminar discusses the assessment, improvement, management, and operation of HVAC systems for preservation environments in museums, libraries, and archives. Functional characteristics and typical configurations are considered, with efficacy, cost, and maintenance implications. Special cold storage and desiccant-based environments are outlined, as well as solutions for small projects and what typically goes wrong with installed systems. 1.0 CEU. Lecturer: William P. Lull, President, Garrison/Lull Inc., Adjunct Associate Professor of Building Technology, NYU. Mr. Lull is a noted consultant, lecturer and author in the field of conservation environments for museums, libraries and archives. He is a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society, and associate member of the American Institute for Conservation.
