Preservation/Conservation Librarian

Responsibilities: The UNLV Libraries invite applications for the
position of Preservation/Conservation Librarian at the assistant
professor rank. The University Libraries seek a
Preservation/Conservation Librarian to administer the Library
Preservation Unit, to coordinate preservation programs and
activities for the libraries, and to plan and establish a regional
conservation center in cooperation with the State Library.  The
preservation librarian reports to the Director of Special
Collections. Responsibilities would include:  Maintenance and
supervision of conservation laboratory, including appropriate
conservation treatments and book repair; coordination with bindery
unit; training and supervision of staff, interns and students;
advising library staff on preservation issues and techniques;
conducting workshops, training sessions and educational programs;
assisting in library facilities planning; ongoing environmental
monitoring, and disaster preparedness planning; liaison with stacks
management; planning and supervising preservation reformatting;
coordination and administration of cooperative or contractual
arrangements for conservation of non-university material;
identifying appropriate external funding sources and preparing grant
proposals; representing the libraries on preservation-related groups
and programs on the local, regional and national level.

Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS degree with specific
emphasis in preservation and conservation; demonstrated knowledge of
current preservation and conservation practices, including digital
imaging. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication
skills; ability to make decisions; commitment to fostering a
collaborative work environment.

Qualifications Preferred: Administrative and supervisory experience
in a preservation unit.  Two years experience in a preservation unit
in an academic library.

Salary Range: This is a tenure-track position.  Position is
contingent upon funding.  Salary is competitive and commensurate
with experience and background; faculty status, attractive benefits
package, including 24 days annual leave, retirement options, health

faculty.  The UNLV libraries are comprised of the main James R.
Dickinson Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, the
Architecture Studies Library, and a soon-to-be constructed Music
Library. Construction on a new main library, the Lied Library, began
in early 1998. This 300,000 square foot, $51 million facility will
include an Information Commons and a fully wired four-classroom
