Subject: Beva film
Barbara Appelbaum mentions the persistent smell of BEVA-371's solvents. A few years ago Eric Lawson reported on a project of his, the restoration of wood fragments of the Mayflower ship enshrined in the arch between Canada and the US at the western border between British Columbia and Washington state. As I recall, the wood was impregnated with an acrylic dissolved in Toluene. Following treatment he decided to evaporate the solvent and determine the quantity of acrylic deposited in the wood by subtracting the quantity of acrylic remaining from the total weight of acrylic dissolved. After a year or so, the solvent was still evaporating. I don't know if it has finished evaporating yet. Just another (vague) data point. Jack C. Thompson Thompson Conservation Lab. 7549 N.
