Subject: Lysol
I was reading a short blurb in the October issue of the American Libraries magazine about a mold attack which inflicted the collection of an Arkansas library. The staff received some consultation on how to handle the situation, although who they consulted was not mentioned. The article stated that the "library and cleaning staffers were hand-sponging all the books with hospital-grade Lysol." If this didn't work, they planned to use a HEPA filter vacuum and another solvent, which was not specified. I checked the Cons DistList archives for discussion of the use of Lysol and found a few articles from a few years back which seemed to suggest that Lysol could be used for treating mold, but as to the amount to use and manner of application, the discussion was varied. One contributor seemed to be against the use of Lysol altogether. I would like to hear current thoughts about the procedure the Arkansas library chose to carry out.
