Although it says nothing about the cleaning of metals, you might be
interested in the recently published book 'Laser cleaning in
conservation' by Martin Cooper, ISBN 0-7506-3117 1, published by
Butterworth Heinemann 1988, UK price 30 pounds.

I do know that a laser was used very successfully in cleaning the
very fragile gilding on the decorative lead elements of the Albert
Memorial in London.  The thick black encrustation was removed with a
minimum of damage.
