Subject: Fashion sketches
We are at the beginning of a grant-funded preservation project to treat and rehouse approximately 10,000 fashion sketches and would like your opinions. The sketches, dating from 1912 1o 1950, represent a wide range of media including watercolor, gouache, graphite and glitter on supports varying from tracing to typing paper and bristol board. The sketches are currently stored within rapidly deteriorating sketchbooks, post-bindings or loose within folders and boxes. Many sketches are backed onto paper or adhered back to back. We are interested in methods used to house large collections of sketches at other libraries or similar institutions. It is imperative that the original order be retained and that the sketches are at once accessible and secure. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Deirdre E.
