Eleventh International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium
International Biodeterioration Association
Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel
Arlington, Virginia, USA
1-6 August, 1999
Sponsoring Society: The Biodeterioration Society

This is the first announcement of the 11th Triennial International
Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium (1BBB XI) and is the
fourth symposium to be held in North America. The first on these
shores and the third in the series was held on the campus of the
University of Rhode Island in 1975. This meeting was auspicious,
bringing together IBBS III and the Society for Industrial
Microbiology (SIM). The organizer, convenors and Proceedings editors
of IBB III were all long-time SIM members who contributed heavily to
the origins of biodeterioration and biodegradation in the U.S. Again
this year the two groups will be meeting concurrently, helping SIM
to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Although each group will
register attendees separately, fees for all categories will be the
same and one badge will permit entry to all scheduled events,
including lunches and beverage breaks.

The venue of IBBS XI is the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington,
Virginia, from August 1 -6, 1999. All sessions, lectures, exhibits,
committee meetings, as well as room accommodations for many, will be
in the hotel facilities.

The official opening of IBBS XI is the morning of Monday, August
2nd, with a keynote address. You are also welcome to attend the SIM
official opening on the evening of Sunday, August 1st. This is
followed by food and refreshments to be held at the exhibit area.
The scientific sessions of IBBS XI will follow traditional lines
that fall under the symposium title of IBBS. These include multiple
sessions on:. (1) biodeterioration of cultural property and (2)
aspects of bioremediation and biodegradation, and sessions on
biodeterioration of (1) fuels and lubricants, (2) medical devices,
(3) consumer products, (4) construction materials, and (5) metal
microbiology; as well as (6) disease from deteriogenic organisms,
and (7) deterioration from vertebrate and invertebrate posts. In
addition to invited papers for labeled sessions, interested
individuals are invited to offer posters which will be scheduled
concurrent on Thursday, August 5th. Offers of contributed papers may
be scheduled in appropriate sessions at the discretion of convenors.
Three concurrent sessions will be held Monday afternoon, Wednesday
and Friday morning, and Tuesday and Thursday morning and afternoon.

All abstracts received for presentations will be published,
unedited, in the earliest possible Issue of International and
Biodegradation (IBB). Selected sessions will be earmarked for
special Issues of IBB and, in addition ,all presentors are invited
to submit complete manuscripts. Every manuscript of whatever source
will undergo the peer review process, the obligatory practice of
IBB.
