Subject: Materials and techniques database
**** Moderator's comments: This query (actually sent in by Isabelle Paradis) comes from a person who is not on the DistList and will not see any responses that are posted here. Please respond directly to sender and if of general interest post it here as well See also Heida Shoemaker posting in Conservation DistList Instance: 11:58, Wednesday, January 7, 1998 available, as always, in the DistList archives in CoOL http://palimpsest.stanford.edu Each year in the painting's conservation laboratory of the Centre de conservation du Quebec, we treat a large number of paintings dating from the 17th to the 20th century. These paintings mostly belong to museums, parishes and not-for-profit organisations in the province of Quebec. We would like to create a database on artists' materials and techniques, using a software programme such as FileMaker Pro or Access. This database could allow us to retain, in a concise format, useful information on the materials and techniques used in each painting we examine or treat. Over the years, it will enable us to make simple and rapid searches on a given artist, group of artists, etc. Although this database would be primarily accessed for research through a computer, we would ideally like the format of the individual files to be printable on a single page of standard size paper. Before deciding on the final format of our model file, we would like to hear from colleagues who may have already created such a database in other institutions. Any general advice or information on the format of a model file, the computer software used, the possibilities of research and of integration to larger networks, would be greatly appreciated.
