Use of the Microscope

This survey course has been given for more than thirty years in
various forms. It has served to introduce or refresh basic knowledge
and techniques of light microscopy for hundreds of amateur and
professional microscopists over the years, especially students in
conservation, forensics, biology, geology, medicine, and other
fields. Pre-eminent instructors volunteer their time to provide a
sound instruction and a foundation for more specialized courses
offered by the society during later months. The course also provides
an introduction to the equipment resources, library, and slide
collections of the society. This course is appropriate for different
levels of skill and experience--all are welcome. The following
topics are covered:

    *   Theory of microscopy
    *   Kohler illumination
    *   Diffraction Theory
    *   Contrast Methods
    *   Polarized light
    *   Phased Contrast
    *   Interference
    *   Hoffman contrast, Rheinberg, Dark-field & oblique
        illumination, etc.

The workshop will consist of four consecutive Saturdays of lectures
and hands-on labs to cover the theoretical and practical aspects of
microscopy.

The course instructors include:

Jan Hinsch, Director of the Micro Laboratory at Leica Microsystems,
Inc. He is a Former Vice President of NYMS and has served for many
years as Awards Chairman. His main area of interest is Polarized
light microscopy.

Mary McCann, formerly a senior microscopist with Polaroid
Corporation and now with McCann Imaging, is the author of a number
of photomicrography instructional books and articles, and has taught
for the New York Microscopical Society, and the American Chemical
Society.

John Reffner, Ph.D., formerly with American Cyanamid and
SpectraTech, is now with Trace Consulting.  He is presently the Vice
President of NYMS.

Don O'Leary, a pigment chemist and microscopist for many years, now
retired, and past president of NYMS, is now curator of the NYMS
collection and Education Chairman.

Eugena Ordonez, current president of NYMS, was a conservator at the
Museum of Modern Art in New York, is currently in private practice,
and is completing her doctoral dissertation on "Lissitsky, Malevich,
and Popova, Working Methods and Materials: An Investigation into the
Faktura of Paintings" at the University of Delaware.
