Gel ink

Our University Central Stores and local office supply outlets are
promoting new pens utilizing "gel" ink which are branded as being
permanent, water-resistant, fade-resistant and the like.    Has
anyone heard of what this "gel" ink consists of and its probable
long-term properties concerning fading?
