Solander boxes

This is in answer to your inquiry concerning Solander boxes. I
published a study of the technical data on storage boxes focusing on
Solander boxes in Museum Management and Curatorship, v. 12, n. 4,
1993:387-400 (republished later in the Archives et Bibliotheques de
Belgique). In this I listed the components of Solander boxes as
produced by various firms: most often Basswood was used. Padfield,
Erhardt and Hopwood (1982) studied the gases released by various
woods and by most reports Basswood is relatively low. Nevertheless,
since your producers are using a variety of materials, you might
want to contact David Erdardt at the Conservation Analytical Lab for
more data on wood and outgasing, or Vinod Daniels or S. Maekawa at
the Getty, they were working with Solander boxes in recent years.
