Subject: HX 187
I have just started researching an Egyptian wooden sarcophagus that was treated in the 1960's by brief immersion in a commercial wood consolidant. According to a report published in "Curator", the product was called HX 187, with the following composition: 10% mineral spirits, 67.5% xylol, 20% non-alkyd resin, and 2.5% phenyl mercuric succinate (30% soln.). Also in the file is a letter from a previous conservator, written to the paint company consultant who recommended the product, asking for clarification of the composition of the "non-alkyd resin". Unfortunately, there is no response in the file. I would like to ask if anyone else has encountered HX 187, and might be able to shed light on the mystery ingredient. Thanks.
