Subject: Erika Heinen
I am pleased to announce that Erika Heinen has joined the Yale University Library as Collections Care Librarian. Erica recently earned the degree of Master of Library and Information Science with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Preservation Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. She also holds a Master of Education and a BA from UT, Austin. While at the University of Texas, Erika managed the Pamphlet Binding Unit in the Preservation Department. The Collections Care Librarian is a new full-time position in the Library. The previous incumbent managed the program on a half-time basis and also served as Assistant Conservator in the Department's Conservation Program. Erika brings to the Department broad knowledge of the role of preservation in a large research library and a keen understanding of the future of collections care. She will have responsibility for directing the activities of the Collections Care Program and for providing leadership on collections care matters throughout the Library system. The Program handles the maintenance and repair of circulating materials in the Sterling Memorial Library. It is staffed with five conservation technicians who undertake minor and major repair treatments and make protective enclosures for new pamphlets and fragile books. Erika will manage the selection of materials for treatment and ensure that quality and production standards are met consistently. Among her many duties in the Preservation Department, Erika will have lead responsibility for implementing a comprehensive collection cleaning and maintenance program in the Sterling stack tower.
