Testing for lead

This is one more response to the query about a simple test for the
presence of lead. I learned about this test via Linda Scheifler in
1983 and have ever since found it reliable and easy to establish
even in the field.

    1. Dissolve a small amount of the metal to be tested with
diluted acetic acid on a tiny confetti made of blotting
paper. Let the confetti dry up while placed on the item.

    2. Add 1 droplet of potassium hydroxide (2% in water).

    3. Add 1 droplet of potassium iodine (2% in water).

A cadmium yellow colour will develop if lead is present. Remember to
"test your test" on a known reference and to rinse the area
affected.
