Director of the Technical Services Center The New York Landmarks Conservancy, a not-for-profit preservation organization in New York City, is currently seeking a Director for one of its major outreach programs, the Technical Services Center. The Landmarks Conservancy preserves and revitalizes architecturally significant structures by providing grants, low-interest loans, and building conservation services. In communities throughout New York City and on a limited basis statewide, the Conservancy works with property owners to ensure the maintenance, repair, and restoration of their buildings. Major initiatives include a Sacred Sites Program, a low-interest preservation loan fund, a grant fund for affordable housing projects, an Endangered Buildings Fund, and a Technical Services Center. The Technical Services Center provides technical advice and project planning assistance to owners of landmark buildings in the New York City area, working on such high profile projects as Ellis Island, St. Bartholomew's Church, and Harlem's Apollo Theatre. These activities involve direct consulting in the form of site visits, conditions reports, and project management as well as answering queries, making referrals to contractors and design professionals, and providing procedural guidance to a select group of institutional clients, especially not-for-profit cultural and religious organizations. These consulting services are provided on either a fee-for-service or pro-bono basis. The Center develops and presents practical information on building preservation and maintenance issues through publications and workshops. It also provides in-house technical review for the Conservancy's financial assistance programs and monitors the Conservancy's facade easements. Responsibilities: In a senior level position, the Director of the Technical Services Center works with the Conservancy's President, board, and senior staff and supervises the work of a Technical Program Assistant. Primary responsibilities include: * Managing and directing all of the Center's consulting services which include making site inspections and writing building conditions assessments and historic structures reports * Representing the Conservancy at technical meetings, seminars, and workshops * Developing and producing Conservancy-sponsored technical publications and workshops * Managing the review and administration of the Conservancy's facade easements * Serving as the in-house technical advisor for projects of other Conservancy programs * Responding to technical inquiries from the general public on the Conservancy's telephone "Hotline" * Cultivating and networking with the members of the Conservancy's Professional Circle Requirements and Qualifications: The successful applicant should have a minimum of five years of experience working in the field of historic preservation with a Master's Degree in architecture and/or architectural conservation. The individual should have particular experience in the area of historic building technology, knowledge of historic building materials and modern conservation and repair materials, experience reviewing technical specifications, writing and reviewing proposals, and the application of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. The Conservancy seeks candidates with strong communication and management skills with the ability to effectively coordinate teams of project consultants and work with a wide variety of clients. The applicant should be a self-motivated individual with a Master's Degree in Historic Preservation and 2 or more years of related work experience. Training and experience with technical preservation and building conservation methods and procedures is required, including experience with architectural photography and conditions surveys. Strong verbal, presentation, research, writing, and editing skills are important. The successful candidate should have the ability to understand and use various software packages for Windows including work with desktop publishing and scanning. The ability to work with a diverse group of clients, contractors and consultants is essential.
