The Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Los Angeles, seeks applicants for two positions. The museum's collections of 90,000 pieces focuses on the history of the American West in both its real and fictional aspects and includes objects, textiles, works of art, ephemera, archival materials, and books. Its facility, built in 1988, contains a suite of conservation labs and support spaces. The Autry Museum is an equal opportunity employer. Chief Conservator: To head the Conservation Department within the Division of Collections and Exhibitions; to be responsible for the department's organization, operation, and project management within the context of museum- wide initiatives and projects which include a very ambitious exhibition schedule; to supervise professional conservation staff, volunteers and interns; to develop and maintain a proactive program of both preventive and interventive conservation; to actively perform conservation examinations and treatments; and to manage contract conservation. Minimum requirements are: Graduate degree from a recognized conservation program with a broad-based theoretical and practical background (wood, metal, paper, leather, textiles, etc.) and a demonstrated specialization in objects conservation; in addition to internships served as graduate program requisites, must have a minimum of five years practical experience in a museum conservation laboratory, with a minimum of two of those years in a supervisory or management position. The successful candidate will be a team player with the knowledge and ability to treat a broad range of object types, a record of successful interaction with a wide range of staff, experience working in a high production environment, and working knowledge of PC word processing in a Windows environment. Paper Conservator: (Search continues.) To be responsible for preventive and interventive conservation on archival materials, works of art on paper, photographs, and rare books under the supervision of the Chief Conservator. Work will include high production in examining collections and proposing and implementing treatments; advising on storage and exhibition environments; and active participation in a very ambitious exhibition schedule which involves matting and framing projects. Minimum requirements are: Graduate degree from a recognized conservation program, one year experience in a museum conservation lab, and a demonstrated specialization in paper and book conservation OR six years experience in a proper conservation lab and a demonstrated specialization in paper and book conservation. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in additional conservation specialties and PC/Windows abilities.
