Project Conservator The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens Grant-sponsored, Three-Year Position, Full-time with Benefits Working as a member of the Library Conservation group within the Preservation Department, the Project Conservator is responsible for conserving rare Library materials from the Bacon Collection. Has contact with staff throughout the institution. Reports to Chief Preservation Officer. Essential Functions: Develop and conduct a condition survey of the collection. Analyze survey data and prepare report on the total number of books to be treated, types of repairs to be performed, and time to complete repairs. Work with curators to examine items and determine conservation options. Measure and order protective enclosures for vulnerable and fragile volumes. Perform conservation treatments on selected high priority items identified by collection curators. Develop a concise multi-year work plan for the systematic conservation treatment of damaged volumes based on survey data. Identify the amount of time required to complete repairs and associated costs for long-term stabilization of the collection. Other Functions: Prepares written status reports and maintains statistics for work completed. May report on project work in a public forum (professional conference, etc.). Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: BA or BS degree and an advanced degree from an accredited conservation training graduate program. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in book conservation. Knowledge of and experience with collection conservation techniques and approaches. Excellent eye-hand coordination. Excellent interpersonal skills and a willingness to interact with conservation staff and share information generally. Excellent professional poise and an ability to express ideas clearly verbally and in writing. Demonstrated experience working in a library conservation laboratory.
