Flaking ink on manuscript

This is in response to John Holmes request on flaking ink on
parchment.  I agree with Jack Thompson that it is likely to be the
ink, flaking in general would reflect Byzantine parchment (see
Bykova, in Restaurator, 1993, 14, pp 188-197).
