Incumbent is assigned to the Scientific Research Department within
the National Gallery's Conservation Division and serves as a
research assistant. Assists scientists with the analysis of artists'
materials (samples from works of art) and the testing and
development of conservation materials. Operates and ensures the
maintenance of laboratory instruments. Prepares reagents according
to standard chemical practices. Maintains inventory of chemicals and
apparatus, stores supplies and cleans glassware. Files laboratory
specimens. Writes reports as appropriate and maintains databases and
files of laboratory records.

This position is a permanent federal position and is classified at
the GS-5 level. It has a potential of GS-7. Those applicants who
meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated
against these factors to determine the best qualified candidate.

    1.  Knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry and scientific
        analytical instruments and techniques.
    2.  Skill in conducting and documenting scientific laboratory
        experiments.
    3.  Ability to prepare written reports recording scientific
        results and analysis.
    4.  Knowledge of art history and art conservation principles.
