The accepted general guidelines for adaptive reuse for a historic
interior are The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for
Rehabilitation.  They can be accessed at the National Park Service's
Technical Preservation Service web site at

You should also check out NPS Preservation Brief #18: Rehabilitating
Interiors in Historic Buildings, which goes into more detail
regarding assessment and recommended approaches. All of the
preservation briefs are of interest and can be found at the same web
site.

If by "landmarked" you are referring not only to the National
Register of Historic Places, but also to a building designated by a
local historic preservation commission, then you would also refer to
the local commission's published design review guidelines. You
should contact the local preservation, landmarks or districts
commission through the local city planning office.

Also be sure to contact your State Historic Preservation Office
about any advice and technical assistance they can offer.
