Subject: Storage
In response to Claire Dean's query about study/storage, we helped design a project in a New York State museum. The public side was a conference room and classroom around which on three sides was a secure corridor. A U-shaped arrangement of storage cabinets had doors on the secure side and glass backs which formed the walls of the viewing room. The cabinets were high quality, and there were many discussion about lighting, shelf materials, etc., so that the results would be aesthetically appealing and conservation grade. It helps a great deal that curatorial access is not from the side that visitors have access to. This was not a very large collection; this kind of design would be harder to do with a huge number of objects. B.
