This is an opportunity to grow with a developing program  of
digitization projects for library collections.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Preservation Digital
Technology Librarian, the Electronic Technology Specialist (ETS)
will work with  Preservation Department staff  and staff throughout
the Library on activities related to employing electronic technology
in digitizing projects, to preserve and increase access to
Northwestern's collections.  This work will include a wide variety
of tasks such as:  image capture and reformatting; determining the
choice of imaging method and file format for various types of
materials; analysis of internal data control needs and external
access needs; data management; migration and archiving of data;
analysis of requirements for function and support of computer
applications; Web page design; provision of server access to digital
collections; troubleshooting; and researching and documentation of
technological developments in the field of library preservation
imaging.  The ETS will also assist the Preservation Digital
Technology Librarian in planning and managing digital projects.

The ETS will perform other duties as assigned.  It is expected that
the responsibilities of  this position will evolve due to the
rapidly changing environment of electronic technology and computing.

Qualifications: Flexibility to work in a dynamic and changing
environment.  Understanding of information technologies, especially
as associated with digitizing books, documents, and images and
making them available on networks. Demonstrated database skills and
troubleshooting skills.  Knowledge of the World Wide Web, web
browsers, HTML, and scanning technology.  Understanding of
bibliographic control issues. Knowledge of  Windows 95 and/or NT
environment; knowledge of Macintosh environment also desirable.
Working knowledge of at least one image editing software program.
Ability to understand and evaluate technical concepts; experience
with user interface design  and graphics software.

General understanding of university research libraries desirable.
General knowledge of library preservation desirable.
