Conservation Technician  (LA II)

Responsibilities:  Trains and supervises 18-22 part-time student
assistants involved in book repair, temporary bindings  and
protective enclosures. Oversees routine workflow of circulating
library materials in and out of the Conservation Laboratory,
utilizing the Library's on-line system. Specifies treatments and
inspects completed work.  Assists in creating and implementing Lab
policies and procedures.  Responsible for statistics and supply
inventory maintenance.  Participates in conducting workshops,
condition surveys and departmental tours.

Performs a variety of conservation treatments including work on a
range of paper, cloth and leather bindings.  Other treatments
include encapsulation, deacidification and the making of protective
enclosures.

Assists the Collections Conservator as necessary to achieve the
goals of the Preservation Department.

Qualifications:  Cooperative spirit essential.  Good organizational,
interpersonal and communication skills.  Understanding of
conservation principles.  At least one year of experience in
bookbinding or book conservation work.  Ability to think
analytically and make decisions. Ability to work independently.

Also desired, but not required:  Experience or strong interest in
library preservation.  Experience and continued interest in history,
art, chemistry, history of the book, bookbinding structure or
library science. Working knowledge of word processing and statistics
programs.

Hours: This is a permanent half-time position. However, temporary
funds have been secured to make the position full-time for two
years. At the end of this period it will revert to half-time if no
additional funding is available.
