Disinfecting treatments with toxic products that we use at the Archivo Historico Nacional in Madrid, Spain: * Documents and Books with Microorganism Stains (preventive disinfection treatment): Options: A: Local applying with cotton tips or spraying of a dissolution of Ethanol 70% on Water (let dry the documents on a well ventilated area). B: local applying with cotton tips or sprying of a dissolution of Ortho-Phenyl-Phenol (OPP) 0'1% in Ethanol. * Documents with Active Microorganisms (Wet Cellulose): Options: A: local applying with cotton tips or spraying of a dissolution of OPP (1g per each litre of ethanol 70% on water). B: bath of OPP sodium salt (*highly toxic*) (1g per each litre of water). C: bath of : 1g OF OPP + 100 ml + 900 ml of water. D: enclose the documents or books (*No Parchment nor Leather*) into a well-close bag or showcase with paraformaldehyde (PF) to sublimate it. Keep the material into a room with a temperature above 20 degrees C. Leave the material into the bag or showcase 20 days at least. Proportions: 3g of PF per 5kg of cellulose There is another possibility using non toxic products (highly enriched Nitrogen atmosphere) but it is a bit complex to explain it. You may seek for information about it at the Getty Institute. *** Conservation DistList Instance 11:96 Distributed: Friday, May 29, 1998 Message Id: cdl-11-96-005 ***Received on Thursday, 28 May, 1998
