Subject: Paper coated with red lead
The "Annals of Medicine" article was titled "Cinnabar" and was by Berton Roueche. It appeared in the New Yorker dated 8 December 1986. The cinnabar had 8.9 parts per thousand of lead and the fabric of the ancient Peruvian tapestry had a lead concentration of 380 ppm. The article speculates that the ancient pigment sample was adulterated with red lead in modern times by someone who needed to add some weight to get a better per ounce price. *** Conservation DistList Instance 11:94 Distributed: Tuesday, May 19, 1998 Message Id: cdl-11-94-008 ***Received on Monday, 18 May, 1998
