Internship at University of British Columbia

From: Darrin Morrison <darrin>
Date: Thursday, May 7, 1998
Advanced Internship In Museum Conservation
Funded By The Getty Grant Program

The University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology is
offering a one-year Getty Internship for conservation training
within this diverse and active museum. This internship will focus
on the integration of conservation within the institution's mandates
to public service and programs, exhibitions, developing
relationships with First Nations, and collections management. In
addition there are the pragmatic aspects of working within an
existing building, budget and institutional culture.

The internship is directed to conservation practice as required
within and beyond the laboratory walls. Working closely with museum
staff in different areas, the intern will be involved in assessing
and effecting preventive and treatment conservation measures
directly related to storage, exhibitions, loans, earthquake
mitigation and the general safety of the collections. Outdoor totem
poles will be a focus this year. The intern is also required to
take one UBC course in museology in order to further his or her
understanding of contemporary museum issues, theory and practice.

This internship is competitive and open to Canadian citizens or
permanent residents of Canada who have completed a recognized
conservation training program. Preference is given to those who
have graduated within the last five years. Recipients of previous
awards from the Getty Grant Program are not eligible. The stipend
for this internship is $2,250 a month. The internship period is one
year beginning Sept. 1, 1998. Interested candidates should send:

    1. A letter of application stating why the Museum Conservation
Internship is pertinent to their professional development.

    2. A current resume.

    3. A portfolio of not more than five examples of treatment and
preventive conservation work, plus at least one example or
description of other work related to museums or
        conservation.

    4. Three letters of reference sent by the referees themselves.

Selection will be made by jury and if necessary by telephone
interview.

Deadline for applications: June 22, 1998
