"Spectroscopy in the World of Art"
Janice Carlson, Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, DE

Abstract: Artists, art historians, and art conservators and
restorers have made use of numerous techniques dependent upon the
interaction of various spectral energies to study, examine, and
authenticate works of art for more than a century. Light microscopy,
x-ray radiography, and examination under infrared or ultraviolet
light sources are perhaps the most common examples. A number of more
sophisticated spectroscopic techniques, widely used in industry,
have now become standard tools for the examination of artistic and
historic objects. These include x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron
microscopy with energy dispersive analysis. This paper will discuss
the application of a number of spectroscopic methods to a variety of
works of art including silver alloys, painted wooden Pennsylvania
German dower chests, glass, and glazed ceramic objects.

Cost: $10.00 per person for the dinner, which will consist of
chilled melon, tossed salad with choice of dressing, stuffed breast
of capon, baked stuffed potato, green peas with mushrooms, rolls and
butter, chocolate mousse, and beverage.

Reservations: If you plan on attending this meeting, please contact
Sheree Gold by noon on Friday, May 15, 1998 at 1-302-738-4849. You
do not have to be an SAS member to attend this meeting. You may
attend the talk without attending the dinner, but please call in
advance so that we can be sure to have enough seating available.

Note: There will be joint meeting of the Delaware Valley SAS and the
Process Spectroscopy Topical Group of the Delaware ACS on Tuesday,
July 14, 1998. The speakers will be Chris Hassell and Dave Leach.
Please mark your calendars. More details will be sent later.
