Subject: Virginia Conservation Association meeting
The Virginia Conservation Association will meet on Thursday, May 28th, at the site of the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological project. Jamestown Rediscovery is a ten-year interdisciplinary project searching for the remains of 1607 Jamestown. Four seasons of excavations have uncovered over 160,000 artifacts dating to the first half of the 17th century. The archaeologists now have enough evidence to declare that James Fort was not washed into the James River, now that they have uncovered 170 feet of palisade line, the east bulwark, three trash pits, and a building all known to be part of James Fort. Site conservator Elliott Jordan and Field Director Nick Luccketti and Curator Bly Straube will talk about the work in the field and give a tour of the labs. Please plan to arrive no later than 5:00 p.m. Directions to Jamestown Island: Take I-64 to Route 199 exit to Jamestown. Follow for about three miles to the junction with the Colonial Parkway (at stoplight). Turn left and go to the stop sign. Turn right and enter the Parkway. Follow signs to Jamestown. At the end of the Parkway, you will come upon a security/ticket booth to enter the island. Enter and proceed to the visitor parking lot. Park and walk down the gravel road and follow around to the path that leads to the archaeological site on the other side of the reconstructed church. If you arrive after 5:00, the security/ticket booth will be closed and you must enter through the exit carefully with your hazard lights on to warn oncoming cars. VCA welcomes guests to this program.
