Subject: Deciphering obliterated text
This is a response to Grace Katterman's request concerning the loss of information from insects eating the surface of tags on objects. I doubt that IR will help if the top layer has been digested by the insects. However, a low tech approach would be to rub a very soft pencil on the back of the labels very lightly. This can reproduce the information given the original hand was heavily pressing down during writing.
