You might want to look at an article by David Tremain of the
Canadian Conservation Institute, "Reverse-glass prints: their
history, technique and conservation, in the Proceedings of Symposium
88:143-152.  He covers much detail in the history and manufacture
and quotes from manuals, esp., an old text by H.G. Clarke (1928).
