20-24 July 1998
University College of Ripon and York, St John, York

This 5 day conference is one of the official events of "Photo 98",
the Arts Council Year of Photography and the Electronic Image. It
will be the first major international conference about the
collective care of these associated materials to take place in
this country. It is intended to bring together all those with

number of papers have been selected both from this country and
abroad, all of a very high standard. The conference is organised by
the Institute of Paper Conservation (IPC) with support from the
Society of Archivists. The venue is also the home of the Yorkshire
Film Archive.

The aims of the conference are:

    1. To provide a platform for British research,
        institutions and societies

     2. To outline the main areas of research world-wide and likely
developments for the future (including the role of digital
technology in the care of these collections).

    3. To provide a clear view of what is accepted practice.

The aims of the conference are supported by major national
institutions, including the Museums and Galleries Commission,
National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Royal
Photographic Society, National Film and Television Archive of the
British Film Institute, British Library National Sound Archive,
