restoration of leather bindings. Revised and expanded from the 1984
edition, this work reflects advances in techniques and materials,

The book has chapters concerning definition of terms, tools and
materials, cleaning, removing the spine, resewing and alternatives;
gluing, rounding and backing; headbanding, back lining, preparation
of boards, rebacking, replacing the spine, repairing caps and outer
joints, repairing caoutchouc bindings, repairing corners, blending
new endpapers, straightening warped boards, rebonding pasteboards,
salvaging old sides; staining, aging, tooling and refurbishing,
recording repairs and a section of selected reading. Alternative
approaches are included for rebinding when the original covers have
been lost or are beyond restoration, modern rebinding, and
replication of original bindings by combining elements of both
modern and historical binding techniques.

During the past 15 to 20 years, a strong tendency has developed, in
some institutional libraries, to treat bindings so that they can be
safely preserved without resorting to full restoration. This is a
difficult and expensive process and sometimes results in loss of
historical evidence. These techniques which have been devised are
described and illustrated in a Supplement. The author has also
briefly reviewed the current state of the labor force in binding
restoration and repair, and of the availability of materials and
tools. He also describes and illustrates extremely poor repair
technique, as an example of what should not be done. "Sources of
Supply" and "Selected Reading" have also been revised.
