Positions at Canterbury Shaker Village

From: Marc A. Williams <acc>
Date: Wednesday, February 25, 1998
Canterbury Shaker Village, a national Historic Landmark located in
central New Hampshire, is seeking a Collections Technician and two
interns for a collections storage reorganization project. The
Technician and the interns will work under the direction of the
Chief Curator and nationally-known decorative arts conservator. The
project will involve documenting the locations of objects, many of
which remain where they were left by the Shakers, careful surface
cleaning, selection of appropriate object housing, re-location of
objects into newly improved storage areas and documentation on the
museum's collections data base. These positions will provide an
excellent opportunity to gain collections care experience within a
real-world historic site museum, as well as to be involved with
nationally significant cultural artifacts. The Collections
Technician will begin work in May, 1998, and work through October
with the potential to extend the position through October of 1999.
The interns will work from June through the end of August.

Canterbury Shaker Village consists of twenty-five original historic
buildings, dating from 1792-1939, situated on a rolling hilltop
surrounded by a 694 acres of fields, wood lots, ponds. The Village
provides an ideal summer location that is only minutes away form
lakes and trails, and only an hour from the White Mountains and from
the sites and entertainment of Portsmouth, NH and the New Hampshire
seacoast. Housing will be provided in an historic building at the
Village, along with a stipend, based on experience.

Applicants should be well-organized, able to work independently, and
possess excellent dexterity. Training and/or experience with
collections conservation and storage reorganization is desired.
Preference will be given to students or alumni of recognized
graduate conservation training programs. By March 16, please send a
letter of interest, along with a copy of your resume to
