Positions at Museum of Scotland

From: Jim Tate <jot>
Date: Wednesday, February 11, 1998
Artefact Conservators
Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

We are seeking skilled artefact conservators to work on the
collections as part of the final preparation for the new Museum of
Scotland. The posts will undertake the conservation of
archaeological and historical items and provide important support to
members of the conservation teams already working on the project.
These are Casual appointments starting as soon as possible until the
end of December 1998.

The posts are within the Artefact conservation section of the
department of Conservation & Analytical Research. The Department
has responsibility for conservation of all the artefact collections
in the National Museums of Scotland and to provide this it is
divided into four sections; engineering conservation; artefact
conservation; textile & paper conservation; and analytical
research. It consists of around 16 full-time posts with a nearly
equal number of attached and contract staff.

The Artefact section is based in new laboratories on the main museum
site in Chambers Street, and further workshops and laboratory
premises at West Granton Road (on the north side of Edinburgh) in a
building which also includes storage and other facilities for the
department. The posts will spend time at both locations, but it is
anticipated that most time will be spent at Granton where the posts
will be based.

Applicants must be skilled conservators and are expected to have
attained a formal qualification in artefact or archaeological
conservation. Post-qualification conservation experience in a museum
would be helpful.

The starting salary will be #12770 (subject to qualifications and
experience).

Applications must be made in writing to the address below.
Applicants may be asked to interview and will then be invited to
bring a portfolio giving supporting information and examples of work
they have undertaken. The closing date for receipt of applications
is Friday 20th February. We hope to start the posts immediately.
