Subject: Workshops on photographic processes
Next summer, interesting activities will be taking place in Dresden, Germany. First, there will be a retrospective exhibition on the German 19th-century photographer Hermann Krone, organized by the Kupferstich-Kabinett (print collection) of the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen (State Art Collection) Dresden (13 June to 23 August). Krone worked in Dresden from 1843 to ca. 1900 as photographer, researcher and teacher. Among other images, the exhibition will show more than 140 teaching panels (ca. 70x100 cm) he used to explain most 19th century photographic processes. There will be a catalogue with a German-English glossary. Second, noted specialists for old photographic processes from the U.S.A., England, Austria and Germany will come to Dresden. For two or three days, they will introduce into the first photographic and photomechanical processes and will work together with the participants at the collotype printing studio of Druckhaus Dresden. There will be workshops on daguerreotype (Grant Romer, U.S.A., 27-28. June), calotype (Richard Morris, England, 4-5. July) and the wet collodion process (France Scully & Marc Osterman, U.S.A., 11-12. July). Early photomechanical techniques like photolithography (Hans Ulrich, 25-26. July) and collotype (Dietmar Guenther, 6-8. July) are scheduled as well. Platinotype (Diether Muenzberg, 20-21. June) and the "True Large Format" (Burkhard Kiegeland, 10-11. June) with cameras cameras larger than 8 x 10" (20x25 cm) in size are completing the program. These workshops might be very useful for restorers and conservators to improve their understanding of historic photographic and photomechanical work. The English-speaking teachers will be assisted by a German translator. The participation fee is 680,00 DEM per workshop. Third, a symposium "Photographie und Apparatur" will take place from 12-14. June, discussing the relation image vs. apparatus in 19th century photography.
