Auckland City Libraries (NZ) has a position vacant for an experienced Book/Preventative Conservator, who will be based at the Central City Library. This is a newly created position, reflecting the City's commitment to the preservation of its heritage library materials. As such it is an innovation for public libraries in New Zealand. Auckland City Libraries comprises the Central City Library, sixteen community libraries and a mobile library service. The Central City Library has strengths in the areas of international and New Zealand manuscripts, historic New Zealand photographs, ephemera and maps. These collections are held in the Special Collections Unit and it is expected that the Conservator will work closely with these materials. The Conservator will be part of the management team reporting to the Divisional Manager, Central City Library. The position will initially be for a two year term and entails: Developing conservation policy and practices for Auckland City Libraries Developing awareness within the Libraries of the importance of the appropriate care for collections Carrying out conservation work Developing the skills of staff working with heritage items Appropriate assistance with the preparation of library exhibitions Qualifications: applicants will be expected to have a tertiary qualification and a minimum of five years post-intern book conservation experience at a relevant institution. Experience at the management level is an advantage.
