Head of Preservation Services or Conservator / Senior Conservator The National Archives of New Zealand / Te Whare Tohu Tuhituhinga O Aotearoa invites expressions of interest from conservators interested in working in an active, developing institutional conservation management programme, caring for archives of major national significance, including: documents bound volumes maps and plans works of art photographs films and videos digital media Most work will be at the Head Office in Wellington, with occasional travel to Regional Offices in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. Preservation Services staff includes 2 conservators, 3-4 technicians including staff based in regional offices, and 3 archives technicians, providing technical support services for the conservation management programme as well as for special media such as film, photographs and fine art. The Head of Preservation Services is part of the National Archives management team, with responsibilities including co-ordinating projects, operational planning, managing staff, maintaining technical standards broader institutional planning. Additional responsibilities include laboratory work, collection surveys, supervising projects, disaster planning and response and conservation management training. External consultancy projects are also undertaken, including building and collection surveys, disaster planning and salvage advice and assistance. Salary Grade 10 (NZ$46,990 - NZ$60,370) Conservator and Senior Conservators implement the conservation management programme through laboratory work, condition surveys, providing advice and training for archivists and technicians, managing projects, and disaster plan maintenance and response. Senior staff in particular will also contribute to external consultancy projects. While laboratory work will usually be carried out in individual specialist areas, project and conservation management work will involve working with a wide range of media, offering variety and opportunity to develop new skills. Salary grade 7 (NZ$33,700 - NZ$43,270), 8 (NZ$37,350 - NZ$47,910), or 9 (NZ$41,720 - NZ$53,570).
