Subject: Microfilm preparation
Our organisation currently follows an historical procedure of manually stamping individual pages of newspapers volumes before they are filmed. This has the advantage of providing a frame count prior to filming which can then be used by the filmer to cross check with the total number of exposures. It also facilitates the quick identification of missing pages/frames during visual quality inspection. However the procedure takes time and also has long term potential for repetition injury if occupational health and safety guidelines are not put into practice. I would be interested to hear from staff in organisations which have alternative procedures for preparing documents for microfilming. In addition to more general comments about preparation procedures, I am also interested in hearing from organisations which have alternative systems for numbering prior to filming (eg electric stampers) which do not damage the originals.
