Master classes on building conservation

The English Heritage masterclass programme in practical conservation
developed at Fort Brockhurst is now to be run by West Dean College
in collaboration with English Heritage, and with the Weald &
Downland Open Air Museum.

The unique 'ruinettes' and practice walling which were the focus of
the masonry conservation courses are to be rebuilt at West Dean in a
large workshop, with a laboratory, converted from a former dairy.
Work has already begun and is expected to be completed by Spring
1998 when the new programme will begin.

Courses will usually be residential and will complement the
full-time post graduate training and other professional development
courses in specialist conservation already run by the College.

The adjacent Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has already
established practical building conservation courses, specialising in
timber.  The deconstructed buildings at the Museum will provide
opportunities for study and practical conservation experience. The
many buildings on the West Dean Estate, situated in the Downland
behind Chichester, will offer further scope for study.

The new centre will enable the intensive practical programme
established by English Heritage to continue at West Dean.  English
Heritage will be validating some of the courses and bespoke courses
for specialist groups will also be developed.
