Senior researcher/researcher, in-situ conservation
The National Museum of Denmark
Department of Conservation
PO Box 260
Brede
DK- 2800 Lyngby

The Department of Conservation at the National Museum is seeking
applicants for a senior researcher or researcher for a newly
established appointment for in-situ conservation of archaeological
metal and wood. The applicants will, according to their professional
background, be placed in either the Section for Conservation of
Waterlogged Wood or the Section for Conservation of Metal.

Background: Changes in environments such as decreasing water table,
or increased dissolved nutrients can, in archaeological sites,
accelerate deterioration and result in the loss of irreplaceable
cultural material and values.

The conditions for preservation of waterlogged finds in the ground
and in maritime environments are still not fully known. The National
Museum has therefore selected the investigation of in-situ
preservation conditions as a research topic because a complete
excavation of sites with large amounts of finds, is neither wanted
or possible.

Work areas: The applicant must enter a close professional
collaboration with archaeologists and scientists from the department
for Danish finds and the department of Research.

The work will include environmental investigations in bog areas,
farmland, urban areas and the sea, resulting in an evaluation of
the optimal conditions for preservation of wood and metal finds.

Qualifications: The applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree or similar,
based on a scientific education or must hold a master degree in
Conservation from The Royal Danish Academy of Art. The work requires
knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines:

    *   physical chemistry
    *   soil science (chemistry)
    *   biochemistry
    *   electro-chemistry (corrosion)
    *   wood technology (deterioration)

As it is a newly established appointment, the applicant must
contribute to the description of the work area in relation to the
objectives of the National Museum. Thus the applicant must be able
to work independently.

Conditions of salary and employment: The working hours are 37 hours
per week.

Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with the
agreement between the trade union and the government related to the
circular of March the 5th 1997, describing the working conditions
for scientific researchers appointed to archives, libraries, museums
etc. under the Ministry of Culture. The applicants professional
qualifications will be evaluated by a professional board with
participation of external evaluation.

For further information please contact Head of Section Birgit
Sorensen (metal), telephone no.: +45 33473545 or Head of Section Poul
Jensen (waterlogged wood), telephone no.: +45 33473526.

Written application and personal data must be forwarded to:
