Position at Dorset Record Office

From: Chris Woods <c.s.woods>
Date: Thursday, January 8, 1998
Project Conservator
Dorset Archives Service
Parish Records Preservation Project

Staring salary in range 13,920 - 16,815 pounds (APT&C Scale 5/6)
depending on qualifications and experience

Following a two year feasibility study, Dorset County Council has
received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Friends of
Dorset's Archives to carry out its Parish Records Preservation
Project. The Archives Service is now looking for a Project
Conservator to carry out the conservation and preservation programme
as the head of a small team, under the direction of the Senior
Archive Conservator.

The Parish Project programme will carry out the packaging,
conservation treatment and microfilming of the parish records held
at Dorset Record Office. This project has been the subject of a two
year feasibility study (including a pilot project) to survey the
collections, establish conservation treatment criteria, design
packaging and recording systems and plan operations. The
collections consist of some 50,000 documents and 11,000 volumes. All
the records will receive new, archival quality packaging and about
250 of the most badly decayed volumes and 10,000 vulnerable
documents will receive an appropriate level of conservation
treatment. There are in addition a small number of coloured plans
and surveys which need some treatment. The major classes of records
will be microfilmed for safe access.

You will need to be a qualified Archive Conservator, with about two
years post-qualification experience. You should hold the Society of
Archivists Certificate in Archive Conservation or alternatively
another formal qualification plus proven experience of carrying out
complex treatments to the full range of archival formats under the
guidance of a qualified conservator. Society of Archivists
Registration is desirable but not essential.

The post is fixed term until October 2000 and a jobshare option is
possible.

If you can offer the required skills and would like an application
form, phone +44 1305 250550 or write to Dorset Record Office,
Bridport Road, Dorchester DT1 1RP
