Preservation of magnetic media

From: Liss Platt <lissplatt>
Date: Thursday, January 8, 1998
Call for contacts and information resources on videotape and
audiotape preservation: Media Alliance, a non-profit media arts
organization serving New York State, is currently producing a
sourcebook on Magnetic Media Preservation. The Sourcebook, edited by
Mona Jimenez, will function as both a resource guide and networking
tool. At this time we are looking for contacts and information on
anyone in the preservation/ conservation/archiving community doing
work on the preservation of audio/videotape.

The Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook will contain information
on:

    * Consulting Services - such as surveys, collection assessment and
management, program development, and grant development

    * Treatment Services - such as cleaning, re-mastering,
        repair/restoration, and duplication

    * Technical Resources/Providers - older equipment, parts, supplies,
        manuals, engineers and repair technicians

    * Organizations and Working Groups such as the Association of
Moving Image Archivists, the Bay Area Video Coalition, and
the National Moving Image Database, RLG Working Group on the
        Preserving Magnetic Media

    * Funders who support audio and video preservation activities
including collection surveys, cataloguing projects and
        re-mastering initiatives

    * Internet Resources--web sites and lists

    *   Bibliography--articles, monographs, newsletters and
publications on video and audio preservation

While the Sourcebook will primarily be distributed in New York State
(free of charge), we want to cast as wide a net as possible to have
comprehensive coverage of preservation activities in audio and
video. Please send any pertinent contact information, even if you
think we may already have it. All leads are greatly appreciated.
Also, if your activities would be relevant to the Sourcebook, please
request a submission form.

All contributors included in the Magnetic Media Preservation
Sourcebook will receive a complimentary copy. Please feel free to
forward this message.

Send all correspondences and requests for submission forms to:
