The message below is posted on behalf of the Southeastern Library
Network (SOLINET).

** Preservation of Photographic Materials will be held on Friday,
January 24, at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.  This
full-day introductory workshop discusses means of preserving
photographic materials based on real-world issues and situations.
Examples of housing supplies, photographic materials and
deteriorated photographs will be provided.

Instructor, Andrew Robb, is currently a photograph conservator in
private practice, providing preservation planning, collection
surveys, and individual treatment for historic and contemporary
photographs in both fine art and archival collections.  His clients
include the Library of Congress, the National Museum of American
Art, and the National Museum of American History.  He also was the
primary author of text on the care and preservation of photographs
for a prototype CD-ROM being developed by the Getty Conservation
Institute.

The cost is $85 ($75 early registration) for SOLINET members and
$125 ($115 early registration) for non-members.  Any institution in
Kentucky qualifies for the SOLINET member rate.

** Archives Preservation:  Holdings Maintenance will be held at the
University of South Alabama in Mobile on Thursday, February 20.
Holding maintenance represents a practical approach to preserving
large groups of records housed in repositories and can have a major
impact on an institution.  Through preventive actions, archivists can
contribute to extending the useful life of materials.

This workshop will be taught by Sharla Richards,  SOLINET
Preservation Field Service Officer and will run from 9 am to 4 pm;

The cost is $85 ($75 early registration) for SOLINET members and
$125 ($115 early registration) for non-members.  ANy institution in
Alabama or Mississippi qualifies for the SOLINET member rate.

** Enclosures:  Protecting Library and Archival Materials, on
Thursday, March 6 at the University of Florida, in Gainesville,
Florida.

This one-day workshop is designed to introduce librarians and
archivists to various types of enclosures and their uses through
hands-on practice, demonstration and lecture.   Participants will
learn the following procedures:  four flap wrapper, phase box, and
various types of pamphlet bindings.  Exercises will address
microenvironment issues, types of enclosures and their use, tools
and equipment, production setup, and workflow issues.  A
demonstration on encapsulation will also be given.

The workshop will run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and will be conducted
by Sharla Richards and Christine Wiseman, Preservation Field
Services Officers.

Cost for the workshop is $85 for SOLINET members ($75 early
registration), $25 NEFLIN members, and $125 non-SOLINET members and
FEDLINK($115 early registration).

** Intermediate Book Repair:  builds on the skills learned in
Fundamentals of Book Repair.  This one-day session is designed to
hone repair skills and expose participants to more advanced
techniques.  Primarily through hands-on practice, with some
demonstration and lecture, participants will learn how to:  recase a
textblock in its original cover; construct a new cover; replace
endsheets (alternative methods); and attach loose signatures.

This workshop is designed for staff members who perform and/or
supervise book repair in libraries.  Previous attendance at either
SOLINET FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR or the NEFLIN and University of
Florida BOOK REPAIR workshop is a prerequisite for registration.
Participants will be asked to bring some tools and samples of
repairs covered in the first workshop.

*The book repair procedures taught in this workshop are not intended
for the repair of rare or unique materials*

The workshop will run from 8:30 am to 5 pm Wednesday, March 5 and
taught by Sharla Richards and Christine Wiseman, SOLINET
Preservation Field Services Officers and the University of Florida,
Gainesville, Florida.

Cost for the workshop is $85 SOLINET members ($75 early
registration), $25 NEFLIN members, $125 Non-SOLINET members and
FEDLINK ($115 early registration).

Special Pricing for Enclosures and Intermediate Book Repair

Special pricing is available if both, Enclosures and Intermediate
Book Repair workshops are taken together.  Only those who have the
prerequisite of either Fundamentals of Book Repair or the NEFLIN and
University of Florida Book Repair workshop may register for both.
Total cost for both sessions are:  $145 SOLINET members ($135 early
registration); $50 NEFLIN members; $205 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($195
early registration).

Both workshops are cosponsored and partially funded by the Northeast
Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN).  All NEFLIN members
are eligible to enroll staff members for a special registration fee.
Partial funding for these workshops has also been provided by a
grant from the Nation Endowment for the Humanities Division of
Preservation and Access.  Any institution in Florida qualifies for
the SOLINET member rate.
