Description Of Duties:  This position is located in the National
Library of Medicine, Division of Library Operations, Public Services
Division, Preservation and Collection Management Section.  The staff
provides a focal point for the preservation of NLM's collections;
manages in-house and contract actions for preservation activities
and management of the general collection; manages staff and user
preservation education and disaster prevention and recovery
programs; and provides consultation and guidance to biomedical
libraries and others on preservation issues and methods.  This
position serves as a Systems Librarian participating in the design,
testing and implementation of automated systems to aid Section staff
in tracking materials during such preservation activities as binding
and microfilming and in identifying and acquiring materials missing
from the collection.  Work involves planning, designing, testing,
implementing and evaluating computer applications and related
technology; defining and requesting modifications to operational and
developmental systems; preparing documentation for computer
applications such as flow-charts and  writing manuals; conducting
training sessions on new or enhanced applications; planning the
preservation and access to newer library technologies in digital
formats, such as CD-ROM's and electronic journals; planning and
developing contract actions for automation projects including file
conversion, special file maintenance activities, etc., preparing
statements of work, serving on technical review groups and acting as
project officer; and serving as lead microcomputer support
coordinator providing assistance to Section staff using
microcomputer software and hardware.
