Painting lined with painted fiberglass

In response to my query (Conservation DistList Instance: 10:45,
November 7, 1996) about the aluminum paint on the lining canvas of a
painting, I have some further information. The adhesive of the
lining was wax-resin, not Beva (the Beva may have been added later
to the tacking edges.) Mary Todd Glaser kindly called me and
related an incident in the late 1950's of Julius Held, an art
historian, recommending to her painting aluminum paint on on the
reverse of a glue lining in order to arrest deterioration. Mr.
Held's wife was a restorer, although she worked in New York in
isolation from AIC and from other groups of non-AIC restorers. I
have heard of her in the past, but don't even know her first name. I
assume that she may have carried out this treatment. If anyone else
knows more about her, or has seen this on other paintings, I would
welcome the information. Thank-you,

B. Appelbaum
