The Conservation Department at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research
Center at The University of Texas at Austin announces:

Assistant Conservator III
Job No. 96-11-04-04-8089-A
Monthly salary $1763 or more depending upon qualifications.

Required Qualifications For This Vacancy:  Master's degree in
conservation and two years of experience in the conservation of
paper, books or photographs with experience in the treatment of
manuscripts, documents, and works of art on paper, not including
professional internships; or bachelor's degree and four years of
experience stated above; or high school graduation or GED, and eight
years of experience stated above.  Completion of a documented
apprenticeship program in conservation may substitute for at least
two years of the required experience at either the bachelor's degree
or high school level of educational completion.  Experience in the
use of basic conservation equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:  Master's degree in conservation; or
completion of a documented apprenticeship program.  Experience in
teaching conservation principles and techniques.  Experience with
large scale conservation and preservation programs and surveys.
Ability to work with minimal supervision. Outstanding verbal and
written communication and leadership skills. Familiarity with
problems of twentieth century paper, book and photograph
collections.

Purpose:  To provide conservation treatment and address preservation
issues for the collections at the Ransom Center.

Essential Functions:  Serve under the supervision of the Head of the
Paper Laboratory or other staff.  Conservation treatment and
documentation of manuscripts, works of art, books and photographs.
Design and construct preservation housing.  Work with curators and
other staff.  Assist in the administration of the paper laboratory.
Train assistant conservators, students, interns and volunteers.
Assist in the management of exhibitions. Perform research on
conservation related topics.
