Subject: Workshop on leather conservation
Progress in Leather Conservation March 12-14, 1997 The objective of this three day intensive workshop is to provide a broad overview of current leather conservation technologies and practices. It will be of interest to individuals from all conservation disciplines who work with leather, including book, furniture and objects conservators. The course will be taught by Christopher Calnan, Adviser on the Conservation of Organic Material, the National Trust, England. He is also a visiting research fellow at the University of East Anglia, Norwich and is Assistant Coordinator of the ICOM Leather Working Group. Lectures and practical laboratory sessions will concentrate on the identification and recognition of animal type, decorative finishes and states of deterioration. Simple chemical and physical tests to characterize condition will be examined. The course will incorporate recent work on the deterioration and conservation of leather by European conservators. The course will be held in the conservation facilities at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center on the University of Texas campus. The Texas Memorial Museum, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Leather Conservation News and International Academic Projects are co-sponsors of this course. Jessica S. Johnson, Objects Conservator at the Texas Memorial Museum, and Olivia Primanis, Book Conservator at the Harry Ransom Center are coordinating the workshop. For more information contact: Jessica S.
